2013 Halfway Point…Are You Reaching Your Annual Goals?

2013 Halfway Point…Are You Reaching Your Annual Goals?

July 1st roughly marks the halfway point of 2013. Is your company on track to reach its annual goals? If you’re not sure, here are some tips from Peoplelink, one of today’s leading recruiting agencies, on how to stay focused and end the year successfully.

 #1: Set Goals Strategically

Sure, anyone can set goals. But when you set goals strategically, you’re also ensuring you have a system in place to stay on target. Doing so involves defining steps incrementally.

For instance, if you set a goal of increasing sales by 5% by the end of the year, what are you doing this month to achieve that goal? What about this week? When you set goals in bite size pieces for you and your team, they’re far easier to achieve.

#2. Look for Change

Change is inevitable, whether it’s new technology or new legislation. And as a leader, it’s your job to anticipate and plan for change. So what do you foresee coming down the pike? Are you hearing about issues or trends in the marketplace? What areas aren’t being served by your current offerings? Do any of your goals need to be adjusted based on recent changes? When you look for change, you can also see opportunity.

#3. Look for Problems

You’re a leader, not a firefighter. But if you don’t anticipate and plan for problems, then you will spend all your time putting out fires. To avoid this, you should be proactively thinking about what problems you might face in the coming year, how they might thwart achievement of your goals, and how you can prevail.

So ask yourself this: what potential problems might you face in the coming year, and what can you do now to avoid them? When planning for problems, it even pays to include some unlikely extremes; at least you’ll be thinking about what do in the face of disaster.

 #4. Share Your Vision

Make sure the whole team is on the same page in terms of achieving goals. But don’t just tell them what your goals are and what you expect from each team member to help you achieve them. Also let them know how they stand to benefit by attaining these goals. For instance, do you plan to offer bonuses or extra vacation days off? Keep your staff motivated by sharing your vision and the rewards.
