Objective – Is it Really Needed on a Resume?

When it comes to resumes, there’s a pretty standard format to follow. That said, there are some parts of it that may seem kind of pointless – like the resume “objective.”

After all, when you’re applying for a job, your objective is obviously to get the job. Does it really need to be stated? Plus, aren’t you taking up valuable real estate space on your resume by including the objective statement?

The answer is: It depends.

Considering that an objective statement should really focus on the employer and how you can help them, you should be able to communicate that information through your work history and summary of qualifications.

However, if you’re looking to change fields or if you’re an entry-level employee with no real track record to promote, then an objective on your resume can actually help you. It can showcase upfront to an employer why you want the job and what unique value you can bring to the table.

But when it comes time to put pen to paper, where do you begin?

  • First, be clear, succinct, and specific. Don’t simply look for vague, online examples of objectives and copy and paste them as their own – e.g. “seeking full-time employment in a position with a dynamic company.” You may as well not even include an objective statement.
  • Second, customize your objective for each job you’re applying to. Keep it short – no more than a couple of lines, but make it clear why you want to work for ABC Company or XYZ Firm. The more specific you are, the better chance you have of standing out to the hiring manager.
  • And finally, but most importantly, demonstrate how, if hired, you will benefit the company. Before you do, conduct some research to find out all you can about the company’s needs for the particular position you’re applying to and then use that as a guide when writing your objective.
