Do you LOVE your job?

Do you LOVE your job?

Most workers are so busy these days they don’t really stop and ask themselves this question. And yet, as a leading recruitment agency, Peoplelink knows that many are bored or unhappy in their positions.

So how can you determine if you’re in the right job – a job you love – or if you should go looking for greener pastures?

Here are 5 questions to ask yourself:

Question #1: Do you like going to work?

This may sound like the most basic question. But it’s also the most critical. If you have a few bad days – where you don’t feel like going into work – that’s normal. But if you spend every weekend dreading Monday morning, then the answer to this question is likely “no.” And if that’s the case for you, then you need to start looking for a new opportunity.

Question #2: Do you like talking about your job?

When you’re at a cocktail party and someone asks you the inevitable “what do you do?” question, do you cringe and not want to talk about it? Or do you openly express your interest in and passion about your job?

If you don’t even want to think about work when you’re off the clock – let alone talk about – then that could be a big red flag that you’re disengaged and not in the right position.

Question #3: Do you respect your boss and co-workers?

Let’s face it. Most people have a co-worker or two they don’t care for. That’s par for the course. Likewise, many employees don’t necessarily always like their boss, but they do respect him or her.

However, if you work in an openly hostile or disrespectful environment, with a bullying or manipulative boss or co-worker, keep in mind that they likely won’t change personalities anytime soon. As a result, it’s up to you to change your circumstances.

Question #4: Do you feel comfortable in the culture?

For instance, if you’re an extreme extrovert and work in a buttoned-up culture that values quiet time and independent work, then you’re likely not going to be happy. That’s why even if you like the actual work you’re doing, you may not be satisfied in the company – and it could be time for a change.

Question #5: Are you happy?

If the answer is “yes,” then you’re in a pretty good place. Sure, you have frustrating days. But overall, you feel like your job and your employer are a good match for you. On the flip side, if you answered “no,” then remember – life is short and it’s up to you to enjoy the time you have. Why waste it in a job that makes you unhappy?

The bottom line?

If you answered “yes” to all or most of the above questions, then it’s wise to stay put. In today’s economy, having a job you love – or even like a lot – is truly something valuable. On the other hand, if “no” was your most common answer, then it’s time to pull out that resume and start polishing!
