But under the new healthcare law (a.k.a. Obamacare), companies with 50 or more full-time employees will need to offer healthcare coverage in 2014 or face a penalty. If they don’t, then the company must pay steep fines…$40,000, in fact, in addition to a $2,000 fine for each additional worker over the amount of 50.
The bad news doesn’t end there.
Companies aren’t allowed to only provide the basics when it comes to health insurance. By law, the plan must cover at least 60% of healthcare expenses and the insurance has to cost less than 9.5% of an employee’s family salary. If coverage doesn’t meet these requirements, companies will be hit even harder – by a $3,000 fine.
