Staying Top of Mind When Applying for a Job

Let’s face it. Millions of people are looking for a job every day. And, as a leading staffing agency, Peoplelink can tell you that staying top of mind is essential to securing a position with a company. This post will offer tips on how to stay top of mind – and give you an advantage when searching for a job.

Don’t Leave a Job Interview Without Finding Out About Next Steps

The job interview went great – you knocked it out of the park. All you have to do is sit back and wait for the phone call, right? Wrong!

Before leaving an interview, always ask about next steps. If the interviewer is being vague, ask them straight out when you can expect to hear from them. That way, if you don’t hear back within the timeframe they specified, you have a good reason to follow up.

Ask to Connect on LinkedIn

Before you leave the interview, also ask the hiring manager if they’d mind connecting with you via LinkedIn. If they say “yes,” then send them an invite ASAP. That way, even if you don’t get the job, you can still stay on their radar for future opportunities with the company.

Send Out a Thank You Note Immediately After an Interview

Sure, your interview went great. But so did the interview with the next candidate and the one after that. So how are you going to stay top-of-mind with the hiring manager?

By sending a thank you note. Not only will doing so remind them of who you are, but it gives you just one more chance to sell yourself and why you’re a good fit for the job. It also gives you the opportunity to offer any information or details you forgot to cover during the interview.

Follow Up…But in a Subtle Way

If you know the job is a great fit for you, and you still haven’t heard back, then follow up in a subtle way. For instance, if you come across an article relevant to an issue you discussed with the hiring manager during the interview, then forward it to him or her with a quick note.

In it, don’t ask about the job or to follow up with you. The goal here is to be helpful and not a pest. So even if you’re not the right person for the position, the hiring manager will keep you in mind for future opportunities if you can prove your worth to them.
